“The final piece sold within 24 hours…” - Becca Ray

With entire creative freedom, Becca Ray designed a one-of-a-kind skateboard for a skateboard project sponsored by Dopeness Brand x Contagion Media! The striking visuals draw you in as your eyes glance around the captivating landscape. This is one skateboard that is too beautiful to actually use! Any skater with a love for extraterrestrials would love “Mermaid Abduction”— it is the coolest kind of functional art!

“It was a new experience doing art on a skateboard. I wanted to do something simple and striking”, said Becca.

This was Becca’s 2nd design featuring a mermaid, but the first featuring a mermaid as the main subject. Many of her art pieces will have you actually stop and take a moment to take in amazing visuals which are never seen in the natural world. In her Contagion Media Artist Statement, Becca’s art is described as colorful, psychedelic, whimsical, and surreal. Visit her Contagion artist page to purchase a unique work of art! Becca, who has experience painting entire murals, had to adjust her approach for this project. “The biggest change for this project was the shape. I have never painted anything so long and skinny.” Many art pieces are wider, unlike the structure of a skateboard. Becca says, “You have to think of the shape and incorporate it into the design.”

The design features three levels; underwater, the atmosphere, and outer space. The result is a colorful, stunning design which has flying saucers and a mermaid looking upwards from beneath the water.

Becca Ray’s striking design evokes the sensation of being in a trance, much like the mythical mermaids are said to have caused. One lucky person was able to purchase this skateboard, and they jumped on the opportunity. “The final piece sold within 24 hours, which is unusual for me. It was very well-received.”
