Interview with Latin-Caribbean R&B Musician Erick Grillo
By ALEXIA
Born and raised in the inner city of Miami, Florida, Erick Grillo is no stranger to the electric genres of Latin-Caribbean and R&B music. In fact, these are the very inspirations behind his own music. This fusion of genres paints a vibrant tapestry of rhythmic beats, sultry melodies, and passionate vocals. This type of music often features a dynamic interchange between lively tropical rhythms and the heartfelt expressions of R&B music, creating a unique and compelling auditory experience. Grillo’s artistic journey began as early as he can remember, seeing as he had been singing for most of his life and playing guitar since he was 13 years old. After growing through adulthood thinking art wasn’t a realistic career– whilst still feeling unfulfilled in his own career– Erick bravely decided to pursue a career as a musician. The rest has been history.

Erick’s first step in his music career was performing acoustic shows in restaurants and bars in downtown Tucson. This eventually turned into four and five-piece live band performances, where he would open up for other artists at various music venues and clubs in Tucson. Since then, he has expanded into a full-blown singer/songwriter, creating and publishing his own music; and well on his way to global recognition and future Grammy wins! When it comes to advice he would give to other aspiring artists, he says, “Just do it. Stop thinking about it. Stop planning it. Stop talking about it. Just do it! Put yourself out there.” By taking the leap of faith and entering the unknown, Erick has achieved goals that he had previously only dreamed about.
Regarding the biggest challenge in his own artistic journey, he tells us, “Without a doubt, in music it tends to be all about networking and meeting people that believe in you and are committed to your dreams. Producers, beatmakers, audio engineers, videographers, photographers, booking agencies, managers, A&R representatives…the list goes on. After that I would say the biggest challenge is finances, because all of this requires funding. But more than anything, finding a team of people that believe in your dream, and are investing in you [is the biggest challenge].”
Erick describes himself as a passionate, creative, and ambitious individual. When we asked about his favorite project he has worked on to date, he chose his single released in November 2023, titled “Quedate”. About this song, he states, “The song basically wrote itself and feels like the most sincere song I have ever written. I’m also very excited and stoked to have worked with Contagion and their creatives for the music video and album art and other pieces of content.” Erick also mentioned his support system, and how they have provided an essential sense of love and support throughout his artistic journey. He tells us, “I’m so blessed to have a beautiful group of friends. I call them my chosen family because I was estranged from my family at a young age. Without my besties I wouldn’t be where I am now. They always keep me feeling loved and supported.”

Additionally, when asked about what has been his greatest life accomplishment so far, he shared that it was leaving the ghettos of Miami, FL and becoming something more; defying all the odds in order to follow his dream. “[My biggest accomplishment] was breaking the mold and following my passions,” he shares. “As a child of Cuban immigrants, I lived at a level of poverty that most people have only seen in movies or on their TV. I’m proud of myself for risking and sacrificing everything and everyone in my old life to pursue my truth.” Erick’s story is an inspiration to all of us who wish to overcome barriers and become the artists we were born to be.

When it comes to standing out in the crowd of other artists, Erick credits his being able to combine Latin music, R&B and even Afro-beats into his music to make it sound more unique and captivating for his audience. He identifies his distinct sound as being a leeway to fostering a better connection with people in his audience, who adore him and his music. He also makes mention of the fact that he is a very empathetic and compassionate individual, which is yet another reason as to why he has such a strong connection with his fanbase. His genuineness and authenticity stands out in the sea of artists. There are a number of artists he credits to influencing his music style, including Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Prince Royce, Justin Bieber, and many others. When we asked how he believes art can influence the world, Erick replied, “Art is intended to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted. Art is about making people feel something. Whether it's painting or photography, it evokes emotions and thoughts.”
Looking at Erick Grillo’s journey thus far in the music industry, one can only conclude that this is just the beginning for Erick. There is no doubt that we can expect to see a lot more creativity and artistry coming up in the future!
