Why art?
Art is something I’ve always had an interest in since I was a small child. I remember being 8 years old and looking through the multiple books my parents had from various art museums and picking out my favorite paintings. I was always drawn to surrealism pieces and paintings with bright colors, the type of art that made me feel something. I have always respected and admired artists for choosing their own path in life, for rebelling from the 9-5 norm that society pushes.
Who is Altered Moon Art?
My name is Becca. I am 24 years old and currently living in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I have been painting and creating artwork on and off my whole life but only within the last few years have I been painting consistently. Starting in 2018, I had a spiritual experience while painting where I felt like the universe was expressing itself through me. After this experience I have received visions that I see with my mind’s eye that I then recreate in my paintings. Painting is an intensely spiritual experience for me and is a way for me to connect to my inner being.
Why did you start creating art?
As a teenager, I used to draw more than paint. I would spend hours drawing my favorite music artists, particularly the Beatles. Occasionally I would paint when someone would gift me art supplies, but it wasn’t until I was much older that I discovered my love for painting. When I was 21 years old, I decided to paint for the first time in over a year, and I had a spiritual experience where I felt like the universe itself was expressing itself through me. Ever since that moment, I have fallen completely in love with painting and try to practice it everyday.
What’s your inspiration?
My inspiration comes from some place deep within me, where pure creative energy lives. I can tap into this place by meditating and through my other spiritual practices. Most of my paintings are recreations of visions I see with my mind’s eye. Sometimes these visions instantly download into my brain. I like to think of them as messages from the universe. I am also very inspired by color. I have synesthesia (which means when one of my senses is stimulated, other senses are stimulated along with it as well) so I see and “feel” colors in response to emotions. I use this ability to choose colors to express emotion in my artwork.
Why is art important to the world?
Art is so important to the world. Art connects us to our spirit, which connects us back to the Source/The Universe/God. Without art, we cannot be our full selves because humans are meant to create. Creative energy is what created us and the entire universe we exist in. When we are creative, we are playing with this divine energy that exists in all things. Art can inspire us and remind us of our true divine nature.
